What is Movement Practice?

Movement in itself doesn’t mean very much besides its obvious definition, which is why it is hard for movement coaches to describe their job in one sentence to people. So, I will attempt to interpret it for the non-practitioner.

We all move breathing is also a movement but how much of that is happening consciously. Movement practice allows you to move consciously. It is in those terms the same as meditation to gain higher consciousness.

The movement has become a popular term and practice that has slipped into pockets of the fitness industry in recent years. Although there are some cross-overs between movement and fitness, they are not the same thing; fitness is only a small part of the movement and it’s often approached from a very different point of origin and set of priorities. I’ll give them both a basic definition (from my outlook as I have worked in both worlds), and try to provide a clear perspective. Note that within movement and fitness there are HUGE variations in standards, styles, and philosophies, so it is important to keep this in mind whilst you continue reading.

In fitness training for the general public, aesthetics generally plays a central role in motivation and goal setting. Looking “good” (lean, strong, upright posture) can be a sign of good health, but it is limited and often misleading. I’m not referring to any eating disorders or the use of anabolic steroids, but directly to the practice of exercising and the result of looking healthy from it. 

Being fit means working on your health (not being sick). But many individuals that exercise in commercial gyms only focus on a small part of being healthy and chase just the aesthetic gains. As a result, many fitness enthusiasts may look fit, but alongside their benefits, they tend to be stiff, uncoordinated, and not very adaptable to unpredictable scenarios (e.g. knowing how to land softly from falling/ roughhousing with different training partners); which are important qualities for health, sports performance, and healthy aging. In fitness training, the variability tends to be limited to a change in numbers (weight/ time/ reps/ sets). This limitation can become monotonous in the long run, and individuals may become numb and seek stimulation from outside. You’ll see many people wearing earphones in gyms, using music to motivate their repetitive motions, and not interacting with others.

Understand a flow state, also known as being in the zone, is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by the complete absorption in what one does, and a resulting transformation in one’s sense of time.
